South East Scotland

Nestled amongst the rolling Border hills in an area of outstanding natural beauty, the town of Peebles straddles the River Tweed – world renowned for its salmon fishing.  The town’s motto is drawn from its strong association with the Tweed – “CONTRA NANDO INCREMENTUM” or “increase by swimming against the current” – but the river is only one of the many treasures that Peebles has to offer.   Made a Royal Burgh in 1152 by King David I of Scotland, Peebles has for many years been cherished by locals and visitors alike, valued for its picturesque and unspoilt character.

Peebles has something for everyone.  In addition to fishing, shopping and award winning restaurants, it is also widely recognised as an arts destination and many visitors enjoy the wide range of local contemporary and traditional art available.  The Eastgate Theatre attracts touring  companies all year round.

Sir Walter Scott, the famous author, was born in Galashiels  and you can visit his house today, just outside the town.  Nestled beneath the , it’s easy to see why artists and writers have been inspired by the beautiful countryside, softer than the Highlands with lower hills and broader valleys.

Dating back to the 7th century and set atop a craggy outcrop offering an amazing view of the whole city, Edinburgh Castle joins the beautiful Royal Yacht Britannia and the Palace of Holyrood House and Abbey as must-see attractions during any visit.
